Dr Sanduk Ruit, a Genius 100 founding visionary and co-founder of the Himalayan Cataract Project, is on a mission to restore eyesight to people who are unnecessarily blind.
Dr Ruit was the first Nepali doctor to perform cataract surgery with intraocular lens implants and the first to pioneer a method for delivering high-quality microsurgical procedures in remote eye camps. Dr Ruit’s ingenuity resulted in a sutureless surgical procedure that provides safe, top quality, and high-volume outputs at a low cost.
In 1994, Dr Ruit helped found the Tilganga Eye Center, which treats an average of 2,500 patients a week, waiving surgery fees for those unable to pay. The G100 Do Tank aims to help Dr Ruit scale up his mission to impact more individuals and eradicate unnecessary blindness globally.
The Do Tank partnered with Dr Ruit to:
1. triple the production of the intraocular lens factory in Tilganga;
2. roll-out a network of community eye hospitals in emerging countries worldwide, and;
3. integrate innovative technological solutions to improve accessibility and care.
